VHS to USB in Carlow, Waterford and Kilkenny: Save Your Old Tapes Before They Go

Somewhere in your house there’s a box of tapes. Birthdays, holidays, a wedding, a christening. You haven’t watched them in years because the video player died around the same time as the television it was connected to.

The tapes aren’t getting better in that box. Here’s what you can do about it.

Why old tapes need transferring now

Magnetic tape deteriorates. Colours fade, the picture turns grainy, and eventually a tape stops playing altogether. You usually don’t find out until you try to watch it, which is too late.

Digital footage on USB doesn’t degrade the way tape does. That’s why we recommend converting as soon as you can. Every year you wait raises the odds of losing something irreplaceable.

What formats can be converted to USB?

O’Neill Wedding Videos handles a wide range, and the full list sits on our transfers to USB page.

Format	Typical use
VHS	The most common home video format from the 1980s to the 2000s
VHS-C	Compact version used in small camcorders
Hi8	High-quality 8mm format popular in the 1990s
DVcam	Professional digital video format
DV	Sony’s digital camcorder format
Mini DV	Small digital cassette used in early 2000s camcorders

We can also convert foreign video formats. Not sure what you’ve got? Bring it in or describe the label.

Wedding conversions to USB

A wedding video is often the most precious tape in the house. If your parents married in the eighties or nineties, the day is probably recorded on VHS and nowhere else. Transferring it means you can watch it, share it and keep a copy somewhere safe.

We film weddings ourselves, so we know how much these recordings matter. Look at our wedding videography page if you’d like a new film made for your own day too.

What happens to your footage

We transfer it as it is, directly onto USB, so you can play it on a modern TV or computer. We don’t promise miracles. A badly worn tape can’t be restored to a crisp image. What we can do is capture what’s there before it gets worse.

Before you send tapes

Check them for labels so you know which is which. Don’t try to clean them yourself. Keep them somewhere cool and dry in the meantime. If a tape has been stored in a damp attic or garage, mention it when you get in touch.

Why bother with USB?

Because it’s a format you’ll actually use. USB plugs into most modern TVs and computers. You can copy it, share it with relatives and keep a backup. Tapes need a player that most households no longer own.

How to get started

Count the tapes. Note the formats. Then contact us and we’ll explain how it works and what it costs. We don’t publish a fixed rate because it depends on how much you have.

Tapes fade, and the only reliable fix is converting them to digital. We handle VHS, VHS-C, Hi8, DVcam, DV and Mini DV, plus foreign formats, and deliver on USB. Customers across Carlow, Waterford and Kilkenny can reach us from our Wexford base.
