Essential Driver Training in Ireland: Everything Learner Drivers Need to Know

Getting your learner permit is an exciting first step towards driving independently. However, before you can take your practical driving test in Ireland, there is an important part of your training to complete: Essential Driver Training, commonly known as EDT.

The programme gives learner drivers a structured introduction to the skills needed on Irish roads. It covers everything from understanding vehicle controls to dealing with traffic and anticipating potential hazards.

If you are starting your driving lessons in Dublin or elsewhere in Ireland, understanding how EDT works will help you plan your training and make better use of your time behind the wheel.

What Is Essential Driver Training (EDT)?

Essential Driver Training is a mandatory driving programme introduced by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) for first-time car learner permit holders.

The standard EDT programme consists of 12 individual one-hour lessons with an RSA-approved Approved Driving Instructor (ADI).

Each session focuses on a particular area of driving. The aim is to help learners develop safe habits and understand how to handle different situations on the road.

EDT applies to most first-time Category B learner permit holders whose first permit was issued on or after 4 April 2011.

It is important to understand that completing the programme is a requirement for taking your driving test. It does not automatically mean you are ready to pass.

You can find the official requirements on the RSA website.

What Are the 12 Essential Driver Training Lessons?

Each EDT session covers a different aspect of driving. Your instructor will guide you through the relevant skills and explain what you should work on before your next lesson.

Here is an overview of the 12 sessions.

EDT session	Main area of training
Lesson 1	Car controls and safety checks
Lesson 2	Correct road positioning
Lesson 3	Changing direction
Lesson 4	Progression management
Lesson 5	Anticipation and reaction
Lesson 6	Sharing the road
Lesson 7	Driving safely through traffic
Lesson 8	Driving safely through traffic in more complex situations
Lesson 9	Speed management
Lesson 10	Driving calmly
Lesson 11	Driving at night
Lesson 12	Driving safely and responsibly

The sessions follow the RSA syllabus, with each one helping you develop a different part of your driving ability.

Why Does Each Session Matter?

A learner may understand how to steer a car but still struggle to judge the correct position when approaching a roundabout.

Someone else may feel comfortable on quiet roads but become nervous when dealing with heavy traffic.

This is why the EDT programme covers different driving situations rather than concentrating on one particular skill.

Your instructor will assess your progress and help you identify areas that need more attention.

Do You Have to Complete All 12 EDT Lessons?

For most first-time car learner permit holders, yes.

All 12 sessions must be completed with an appropriately approved RSA driving instructor and recorded on the MyEDT system before you can be scheduled for your practical driving test.

There is a reduced EDT programme for certain drivers who hold qualifying foreign driving licences and meet the RSA eligibility conditions. This generally involves six sessions rather than 12.

If you think you qualify, check with the RSA before booking your training.

You should also remember that EDT does not replace the six-month learner permit requirement. First-time car learner permit holders must generally hold their first permit for at least six months before taking the practical test.

How Does the MyEDT System Work?

MyEDT is the online system used to record and monitor your completed Essential Driver Training sessions.

When you finish an EDT lesson, your Approved Driving Instructor records the session so that your progress can be tracked.

You should receive an official EDT logbook when starting the programme. Keep it safe and make sure the relevant entries are completed correctly.

It is a good idea to check your MyEDT account regularly rather than waiting until your driving test is approaching.

The RSA advises allowing at least 10 working days for recently completed sessions to appear in the system.

If a lesson is missing after that period, contact the instructor who delivered it.

You can access your records through the RSA MyEDT portal.

How Long Does It Take to Complete EDT?

You can complete your 12 sessions over a period that suits your learning schedule, provided you meet the relevant requirements.

However, completing everything as quickly as possible is not necessarily the best approach.

The RSA recommends leaving around two weeks between EDT sessions. This gives you time to practise the skills covered in each lesson and become more comfortable before moving forward.

For example, after a session on road positioning, you should pay attention to your position during subsequent practice drives.

This makes the next lesson more useful because you have already had an opportunity to apply the instructor's advice.

Remember that the six-month rule still applies to first-time learner permit holders, even if all 12 sessions have been completed sooner.

Can You Change Your RSA-Approved Driving Instructor?

Yes. You are not required to complete all 12 EDT lessons with the same instructor.

You can change your ADI during the programme if your circumstances change or you feel another instructor would suit your learning needs better.

Before booking, check that the instructor is currently registered with the RSA and approved to deliver Category B EDT.

You should also make sure that each completed session has been properly recorded.

When choosing an instructor, consider their teaching approach, availability and how comfortable you feel asking questions during lessons.

A patient driving instructor can make a considerable difference, particularly if you are a beginner or feel nervous about driving in traffic.

What Should You Do Between EDT Lessons?

Your progress should not stop when your scheduled lesson finishes.

The time between sessions is when you can practise what you have learned and become more familiar with different road situations.

The RSA recommends at least three hours of practice on the skills covered in the previous session.

Here are a few ways to make that practice more productive:

Review the relevant section of your EDT logbook before practising.
Read the corresponding parts of the Rules of the Road.
Ask your sponsor to help you practise the skills covered in your last lesson.
Pay attention to feedback from your instructor.
Make a note of situations you find difficult so you can discuss them during your next lesson.

A sponsor is generally an experienced driver who accompanies you during practice. They must meet the legal requirements for accompanying a learner driver.

You must never drive unaccompanied on a learner permit.

Are Additional Driving Lessons Needed Alongside EDT?

EDT provides a structured foundation, but many learners need additional driving lessons to become confident and test-ready.

The 12 sessions cover specific training objectives. They are not designed to cover every situation you may encounter when driving independently.

Extra lessons give you more time to work on areas that require improvement.

For example, you might need additional practice with roundabouts, reversing, junctions or driving in busy Dublin traffic.

One-on-one driving lessons can be particularly useful because your instructor can concentrate on your individual progress rather than following a fixed group learning schedule.

At Next Level Driving School, learners can arrange professional EDT instruction in Tallaght and Dublin, with additional driving support available as they progress.

When Can You Take Your Driving Test After EDT?

Completing your EDT programme is one of the main requirements for taking the Irish driving test, but there are other conditions to meet.

Before you can be scheduled for your test, you generally need to:

Hold a current and valid Category B learner permit.
Have held your first learner permit for at least six months.
Complete all 12 required EDT sessions, unless approved for reduced EDT.
Ensure the completed sessions are recorded on MyEDT.

You should also have enough practical experience to drive safely and independently.

If you have completed your mandatory lessons but still struggle with certain driving situations, arrange additional instruction before attending your test.

You can check your eligibility through the RSA driving test eligibility guidance.
